4 Steps to Eliminate Credit Card Debt

Just like you, I have found myself swimming in a pool of credit card debt, the surface is nowhere to be found. With a large amount of credit card debt, we often feel like we are drowning and there is no way out. However, we a little self-control and determination we can solve our credit card debt problems and begin to breathe a whole lot easier.

Eliminate Credit Card Debt Step #1 – What do you owe?

Before you can really take care of your credit card debt problems, you have to have a good idea of just how much money you owe the creditors. This means that you not only have to look at how much you have charged, but as well as any fees and interest as they apply to the credit cards. You then need to figure out your household budget. Knowing what you make, what you owe, and what you spend each month is an important step to freeing yourself from the pool of debt.

Eliminate Credit Card Debt Step #2 – Slash the Spending!

While you may not realize it, even if you are paying on the credit card each and every month, if you keep using the credit card you will never reach the surface. You need to put away those credit cards. You could lock them up, cancel them, or even put them in your freezer, but whatever you do, get them out of your purse or wallet. The temptation is too great when you have easy access.

However, slashing the spending does not only apply to credit cards, it applies to all your spending as a whole. This means you should take a close look at what you spend each month and make adjustments. You do not need all the luxuries in the world, especially if you are trying to reduce your credit card debt.

Eliminate Credit Card Debt Step #3 – Get a Lower Rate of Interest!

Obtaining a lower interest rate can really help in reducing the amount of credit card debt you owe. This might mean transferring your balance to another credit card. This may seem like a double negative, getting another credit card. However, if the new credit card has a great rate and low balance transfer rate, you might find yourself in an easier situation. This will allow you to pay more on the principal and less on the interest.

Eliminate Credit Card Debt Step #4 – Less Credit Cards, Less Trouble!

Choose one credit card, the one with the lowest interest rate of course, and eliminate the others. Cancel them and cut them up. You only need one card for emergencies. The best way to eliminate credit card debt is to eliminate all unnecessary credit cards. Just because you can get more than one credit card, does not mean that you should. Keep it to a minimum; you will not be as tempted if you only have one.
