Be Smart, Reduce Credit Card Debt

How can you reduce credit card debt? Well, it may not be as simple as many people make it sound. If you look around the internet, you will see thousands of articles and websites all geared to helping you reduce credit card debt. They make it sound so easy, when in reality, it is not as easy as they make it out to be. In this day in age, credit cards are almost a necessity.

Think about it, without a credit card, can we make a hotel reservation in a town 900 miles away from us? The simple answer, no, you cannot. Can you rent a car? Generally, no, you cannot. If you do not need a credit card, you will have to have a large sum of money to put up for deposit. Can you purchase items of the internet? Again, generally no, some websites might accept money orders, but it is a rare thing. Today’s life revolves around credit cards for nearly everything.

Credit cards have made life easier, we can go grocery shopping, pay for gas, travel easier, and have a back up in case of emergencies. However, with that convenience comes some real disadvantages. What usually happens with credit cards, is that at some point in the month we will find ourselves low on funds. We then turn to the credit card, whenever we need something or even when we do not really need it, but we want it, which can lead to a world of trouble.

What do we have to do to reduce credit card debt? It will take some hard work and determination that is for sure. The first thing we should do is ensure that we only carry one credit card. More than one is just asking for trouble. Pay off and cancel all other credit cards. Keep just one. Then, you might not like this part, keep that one credit card in a safe place in your home, definitely not in your wallet or purse.

To reduce credit card debt, you have to reduce the urge to use it. If it is somewhere other than your purse or wallet, you do not have easy access to it. Therefore, when you find something you want but do not need, you would have to run home to get the credit card. By then, you may have talked yourself out of it, which will greatly help reduce credit card debt.

The above is just one step you can take to reduce credit card debt. You will find that this method works very well. Just think about it, how many times have you brought out that credit card just because you wanted that great shirt or that golf club you really did not need? When you keep the card at home, you will have the opportunity to rethink that purchase and most times you will likely decide it is not necessary.
